For
the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted
after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through
with many sorrows. (1 Timothy 6:10)
Those who seek to be rich will pierce themselves with many sorrows. Such sorrows will then lead to destruction. People who chase after riches do not chase after riches because they are happy. They chase after it because of their sorrow. Their sorrow drives them to chase after riches, leading to even more sorrows. They are sorrowful for having less than they want, less than they think is fair, or less than others. It is because of this sorrow that they are driven to seek riches, thinking it will make them happy and joyful.
However, such a person is like a hamster on a wheel. He seeks riches out of sorrow, thinking it will give him satisfaction, only to find that it drowns him in more sorrow. So, as he seeks more riches, he drowns himself in more sorrow each time.
The spirit of mammon uses sorrow to drive people to chase after riches. He does so by stealing a person's joy. Stealing a person's joy is the first step that he uses to find slaves to enslave themselves to him. The sorrow which the spirit of mammon uses to tempt people is very subtle. The person with such sorrow often does not realise that he has such sorrow. For such sorrow is dressed under the guise of being needy, not having enough riches, being lazy for not earning money, which is not necessarily the same as not working, or having to provide for oneself.
The spirit of mammon is always there to make people feel as if they do not have enough, and have to provide for themselves, whether they are rich or poor. The spirit of mammon is blind. He tempts all people, whether rich or poor, or whether Christian or not. The feeling of not having enough leads to sorrow of the heart. This sorrow may be felt as misery, anxiety, shame, emptiness or depression as a result of not earning money, which is not necessarily at same as not working, as a person may be working very hard without earning money, not being able to have as much of something they want, or not having the material things that one wants. The person with such sorrow often thinks or feels that it is 'natural' to feel that way, because that is indeed how the flesh would feel.
The spirit of mammon tempts people to be enslaved to him, by appealing to their lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. Once a person has been held captive to these three desires of the flesh, mammon has taken hold of a person. That is why people do not even realise that they are under the spirit of mammon and why people can hardly discern him, because he appeals to their very fleshy nature itself. This explains why only those who are truly worshiping God in spirit and in truth, by walking in the Spirit, being led by the Spirit, and learning the truth about the Word of God.
As a result, the sorrow one feels in relation to material riches and all the things that it can buy is not realised, though it is felt in one's soul. This is all a demonic manifestation, a manifestation of the spirit of mammon. It is not a good sorrow, but a demonic, or demon-inspired sorrow. It is a sorrow that is one is tempted with by the spirit of mammon, by appealing to one's feeling of poverty, neediness or lack. Where one is living by the flesh or succumbing to it, one will be most definitely enticed into sorrow by such feeling of poverty, neediness or lack, because the flesh can never be satisfied: Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied (Proverbs 27:20).
The lack of a joy as a result of failing to fully trust in God's provision, leads to sorrow owing to lack, which then leads one to seek riches for oneself leads to destruction. It leads to destruction as it leads to loss of faith in God, shipwrecking a person's faith.
