Many Christians are anxious about being able to meet their bills and wish to have a "better" ie. "higher-paid" job. This is exactly what it means to be under the spirit of mammon. It is the real give-away.
Simply because one is a true Christian does not mean one cannot be under the spirit of mammon. As long as one is not completely content with what God has already give to one, out of His grace, one is under the spirit of mammon.
You may be serving God, but the power of mammon over you may be strong, so that he may hold you in spiritual bondage. This is what is means for a true Christian to be under the spirit of mammon. As such, you cannot fully serve God, though you may try to. This is because of bondage to mammon.
There is a difference between serving mammon, and being influenced by him but not serving him. The true Christian cannot be serving mammon, but he can be influenced by him, that is, under the spirit of mammon when he is anxious or not totally content with what he already has.
Jesus said: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24).
