Many Christians think they are very righteous because they care for their families. They think this is the case because "if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel" (1 Timothy 5:8).
They completely misunderstand the spirit of 1 Timothy 5:8. What is really means is that even the wicked, vile unbelievers look after their families. Even the man who lives his family or a woman who fornicates with men who she is not married to do look after their families. Yes, that's right. Even the wicked vile fornicators and adulterers care for their own children.
Many in the modern church think that 1 Timothy 5:8 justifies seeking earthly needs, that is, living by bread alone. They think it makes it legitimate to do so. Seeking earthly needs is to serve mammon and has no place in the Christian's life. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things (material things and needs) shall be added unto you".
He did not say seek your material needs. It is natural for the human and therefore sinful because it is always self-centred to do so. How is it different from the unbeliever to seek your earthly needs for your family? If even the unsaved can do something, it is not righteous, but self-centred.
