Many people love to boast about the things that they have which everyone seeks after but do not have, whatever it may be. They boast and their boasting makes people feel uncomfortable, upset or envious. The reason people feel that way is because people not only seek after earthly happiness.  Earthly happiness is that which people find security. People derive their earthly happiness from not only the earthly temporal things they have, but also their security. That is why people feel uncomfortable, upset or covetous when seeing others also have what they have and find their security in. The earthly happiness people have is not true joy. The nature of joy is that it is supernatural. It is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Since joy is a fruit of the spirit, it does not and cannot come from the flesh. Many in the modern Church in the west deny the exists of real demons which seek to tempt people into sin. Nothing can be more misguided than this. They ridicule and mock all talk about the spirit of mammon, and to look "biblical" and thinking they are so "biblical" and "holy", simply retort that they find many verses in the Bible about sin from the human heart. Yes, the human heart is inclined to sin and can but only sin (Jeremiah 17:9; Matthew 15:19; Mark 7:21). However, this does not mean that there are no evil demonic spirits out there who seek to seduce people, including true believers of Christ into sin, to snatch the faith out of their hearts.  There is a such thing as deceiving spirits. The prosperity "gospel" is  a demonic, wicked, perverse doctrine from the Pits of Hell that has crept into the modern church. It comes it its obvious form, and a more subtle form into many local churches in the 21st century. Whether in its obvious form, or subtle form, it is the same spirit behind it. That spirit is the spirit of mammon. One may think, "My church does not take tithes, nor does it teach people that the more money one earns, the more God will bless that person, so my church is not influenced by the spirit of mammon" as it seems to be the attitude of many Christians today. Nothing can be further from the truth. A church which does not teach such things, does not mean that the spirit of mammon has his handprints on the church. The Bible makes it very clear that those who serve mammon will "pierce themselves with many sorrows" (1 Timothy 6:10). It is not that sorrow is a wicked ungodly thing. It is ungodly sorrow that is wicked. Such is the case of an Australian model Charlotte Dawson who was found to have suicided. Her autobiography reveals that she became depressed after having an abortion. It seemed that she tried to justify her decision for her abortion, by implying that if she did not have the abortion, she would not be able to enjoy her life, but yet felt the guilt. She then turned to alcohol to literally attempt to drink away her sorrows.  This is not written to ridicule, mock or scorn her in anyway. Rather, it is written to demonstrate how serving mammon will pierce people with many sorrows. Many Christians fail to see how covetousness which stems from idolatry puffs up human pride. They dismiss it as just another sin like any other. However, the idolatry, from which covetousness grows is placed in the same categories of sins as sexual sin which is lust of the flesh.   Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God?
