The spirit of religion is an extremely pernicious and dangerous spirit, far more dangerous than the spirit of Jezebel who everyone loves to target. Let me be clear, the spirit of Jezebel is evil, but she only arises because the spirit of Abab exists. One would be wise to remember that it was not the spirit of Jezebel, but the spirit of religion who murdered Jesus. For every one person under the spirit of Jezebel, there are thousands under the spirit of religion. The spirit of religion is a vile spirit that not only claims holiness and righteousness, and appears to be holy and righteous to others. It is a spirit that attempts to justifies its own wickedness and unrighteousness by trying to legitimise its false holiness and righteousness on others. This explains why religious people love the moral Law. It is because in trying to legitimise their own holiness and righteousness, they must find that by which they can justify themselves. The spirit of religion is a spirit that loves power and authority. It loves to manipulate, intimidate and dominate people. It is the spirit of religion working through the pharisees that they constantly sought to trap him ( manipulation ) (Matthew 16:1; 19:3; 22:17-18, 35-36; Mark 12:13-15; Luke 10:25; 11:53-54; John 8:3-6), threatened to kill him multiple times ( intimidation ) (John 8:56-59; 10:30-33) and finally, accused Him of wickedness to murder him ( domination ) (Matthew 26:65-66).  The spirit of religion is truly a vile spirit that hardly anyone talks about because people can hardly perceive him. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (2 Timothy 3:5) Religion is not godly or holy. It is precisely religion that makes people who were one time being drawn to genuinely seeking the truth about Jesus turn away from the truth. There are many professing followers of Christ in the professing Church today who are religious but are not truly spiritual. They attend church regularly, may be active in church, and even read Scripture regularly, pray and fast. Most who think that they are followers of Christ, or Christians, in the true sense of the term, but are not.  Being a follower of Christ is not about being religious, but about being spiritual, walking both in truth and in Spirit (John 4:24). A person may be religious and not know Christ at all, just as the Pharisees in the New Testament did not know Christ at all (Read the synoptic Gospels in the Bible, that is, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Such people will hear Jesus say to them on the Day of Judgement: ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ (Matthew 7:23). What frightening words!
