Capitalism is not merely an economic system. Nor is it just a
system which enables people to buy and sell from each other. It is an ideology
with a spiritual dimension. It has an morality and an ethic, just as liberalism
has an ethic.
The capitalist ethic is that one has a "right" to use one's money as one sees fit for oneself. Governing authorities have no right or authority to tell one what one should use one's money, because it is one's own money. That is the liberalism inherent to capitalism, for capitalism is economic liberalism.
According to the
capitalist ethic, one does not need to give money to the poor and needy. Giving
to the poor and needy is a "choice" that is up to oneself to decide.
The rationale of this ethic is that one need not care for the poor and the
needy. They are to be left at the mercy of those who are rich.
This ethic is
precisely the heart of the oppression of capitalism. Capitalism is not only
oppression of the poor and needy. It encourages the oppression of the poor and
needy, so that the rich can benefit of their labour.
