But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. (1 Timothy 6:9-11)
The Word of God makes it clear that those who seek money will pierce themselves with many sorrows. The question is what does it mean to seek money, and why is it that doing so will lead to many sorrows.
To seek money is not to be equated with working, and working is not to be equated with seeking money. They are different and separate concepts which people often confound together. People often think that to say that one should not seek money is to say that one should not work. That is a serious misconception about what it means to seek money. To seek money means to pursue it to enjoy it for oneself and one's circles. It means to live for it. Mammon is one's master. A person who seek money is controlled by the spirit of mammon. He does not control money. Money controls him.
The sorrows referred to 1 Timothy 6:10 is not necessarily saying that those who love mammon will eventually one day be destitute as a result of their greed and have no money, causing them much sorrow. While that can happen, that is not necessarily saying that that will always be the case, for there many who love mammon become extremely rich until the day they die. Many who love mammon have much financial security that is the envy of those around them. Many such people are also very happy people in that they have what they want, and enjoy what they have.
What 1 Timothy 6:10 is saying that is loving mammon leads to many sorrows because it leads to constant spiritual bondage to mammon. This is slavery, and is oppresses the soul because one is constantly trying to feed the flesh. That is what Apostle Paul meant when he said that those who love mammon "pierce themselves through with many sorrows". No matter how much they have, there is a constant desire for more riches, as they have bound themselves to mammon who is an evil master who entices people with desire, but never satisfies their desires. Furthermore, their desire for money is a desire for that which is only temporal and not eternal, and therefore, that which is nothing but an illusion. The money you have will be gone from you one day, and purpose is only earthly. It has no greater purpose than to help you purchase you basic needs.
The spirit of mammon oppresses those who serve him. That is the cause of sorrows of those who seek him. It is immaterial as to how much one has as to whether one is sorrowful as a result of desiring to be rich because it is the very lust for money, that is not able to satisfy that causes sorrow. The sorrow is the result of a lack of peace, joy and a meaningful life. For one's peace is placed in a master which does not promise what it claims to promise, one's joy is placed in a master who seeks to entice people with more desires, but yet those desires cannot be satisfied, and one has no meaning in life as one finds one's purpose in that which is a mere illusion.
No matter how much happiness one has from money, such happiness is not real or lasting. It is only temporal, and like the waves of the sea that come and go. Those who seek mammon will have nothing but sorrow, despite having all that one wants, because one serves a master who oppresses the soul with a desire that can never be satisfied.
The only way to be truly satisfied is in loving God. To come to God, one must have Jesus. Jesus died for your sins against God, be it the sins of lying, stealing, adultery, fornication, murder, idolatry, hatred, and blasphemy, so that God can take away the just punishment you desire. To have Jesus, one must repent of one's sins and turn to Jesus Christ.
