For those of you modern evangelicals who call me a 'heretic' as one such person has done by saying very arrogantly and presumptuously, priding his own "opinion" about the Bible as "holier-that-thou", that he "disagrees" (as if the Bible had room for opinion) about the way I speak about mammon, or for that matter any other spirits.
Read this:
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places (Ephesians 6:12).
Simply because a name of spirit is not found in the Bible does not mean it exists. When Jesus said do not serve God and mammon, he was referring to 'mammon'. Mammon is a spirit - an evil demonic spirit. As I am writing this, I can feel the hairs on my armpit stick up because he is angry at me for exposing him. I will continue to expose mammon's plans and enjoy doing so. I have made him even more angry.
Jesus was warning people, His followers, not the unsaved, in Matthew 6:24-31 against serving mammon. This is very significant. They were His followers as can be inferred from Matthew 6:32 where Jesus tells them not to be like the pagans - implying these people were His followers. Yet He was warning them about serving mammon. The Bible makes it clear that the believer wrestles not against flesh and blood, but temptations from evil spirits. Galatians 5:24 says that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
To speak of mammon as a spirit is in no way denying wickedness of the human heart. Rather, it is to affirm it as one that yields to it. It is analogous to a person in a house who chooses whether or not to open his door to a person who knocks on it to harass him. If he opens it, it is out of his volition and nature. The unsaved cannot but help yield to the harasser. The saved can resist the harasser. However, the saved person can yield to the harassers knocking because he thinks it is legitimate to do so. The harasser can trick him into thinking so by persuading and deceiving him with his speech.
