Earthly affection is of the world, and hostile against God

Many people, even within the church have a desire for earthly affection. So, what is earthly affection? Earthly affection is that which concerns the things of this world - lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and pride of life (1 John 2:16). Earthly affection is against all the characteristics of God's love.

Earthly affection is not merely a desire to love and to love. Even the unsaved wicked vile sinners are capable of earthly affection. That the unsaved wicked vile people are capable of doing this itself indicates that there is something wrong with earthly affection. If vile wicked humans are capable of something "good", there must be something evil impure and vile about it. That is precisely what earthly affection is.

The unsaved can indeed do "good" things like fighting abortion. There are many in the pro-life movement who are enemies of God. The earthly-minded pro-life movement which shows humanistic sympathy towards murderous women, and compromising attitudes towards abortion, as opposed to the Gospel-centred abortion abolitionists are a classic example are how earthly-minded people are trying to show affection.

Earthly affection, as opposed to godly affection is one that seeks as its ultimate end, and earthly goal: one that will not be eternal. It is one that fears people, because it only cares for what others think, it is conditional, and seeks justice only for itself. It is self-centred and expects gain in return. It is prejudiced and presumptuous. It is false compassion.

One might argue that at least such a person is trying to be kind. It is because an unsaved person is trying to be affectionate that makes it all the more hypocritical, wicked and vile.

Those who are dominated by earthly thinking and try to show affection, will only show their true heart. Their affections will be manifested as earthly, ungodly affections.

The world does love others, but only conditionally. It only loves those who do 'good' to them, whatever they may perceive good to be.

Matthew 5:46 says: "For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?" Even the vile wicked people love those who love them. That explains why the world loves children, parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, wives, husbands and relatives.
