Lust is a desire for anything at all, whether food, education, good health, relationships or money, outside of, or beyond God's permission or His ordained order. With sex, God has clear boundaries as to where one's sexual desires should be channeled. Jesus made it clear that "no one can serve two masters". A person can only either serve God or mammon (Matthew 6:24). Thus, lust is anything that draws people further from God and puffs up the flesh and the carnal mind. Even humanitarian work and religious works can be based on lust.
As long as one pursues something outside of God's will, it is lust. Lust hardens one's heart against God and darkens the mind. Romans 1:24-25 says: "God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised". That's the result of lust.
