The spirit of mammon is the spirit which works behind literally everything in this world. Whether it be through the world's political, economic, social or cultural systems, to popularly embraced ideologies, the spirit of mammon is that which drives everything.
The spirit of mammon is not merely a spirit of materialism. To make such a claim shows a limited understanding of what it really is, and may indicate that one is indeed under the spirit of mammon. Rather, it is one that seduces people to serve the lust of the flesh - the perceived needs of the person. Such needs may be legitimate needs like food, however, when such material needs are craved after to the extent that they take priority over feeding on the Word of God, the person has succumbed to the lust of the flesh.
The spirit of mammon seduces people by appealing to the material needs, and leads the person to serve only their physical, earthly needs, that which will perish. When satan tempted Jesus in the desert, he first asked Jesus to turn these stones into bread (Matthew 4:3), to which Jesus replied, "Man cannot live by bread alone" (Matthew 4:4).
The world only sees the natural realm for the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned (1 Corinthians 2:14). It cannot understand the spiritual realm. Therefore, it views things through what actually occurs regardless of what spiritual implications it may have, and is concerned only with the consequences. Thus, it is unable to analyse anything through discerning what is good by God's standard. Rather, it can only make up its own standards to determine good and work according to that.
Since only earthly things satisfy the flesh, the world only sees and is only able to see those of the flesh. This is because it cannot receive spiritual things. As such, the world can only love that which is earthly because the flesh craves only for the earthly. It cannot love that which is of God, the source of all goodness and wisdom. Mammon is the spirit behind earthliness, which is a beast which feeds earthliness to the world, as it takes it to Hell. It is the one that makes the world all to happy to go to Hell because it gives it food for the flesh - the only thing the world seeks after.
